Fishing boat stranded in mud at the end of Burnham’s jetty

-

A fishing boat has become the latest victim of Burnham’s treacherous mud after getting stranded at the end of the town’s jetty.

A tractor was brought in to try and move the wedged boatBoat owner Gerald Smith, from Bristol, said he misjudged the tide when his boat ran aground and became stuck in the thick mud next to the southern end of the jetty at around 12.30pm on Saturday (April 29th).

He called on the help of tractor owner Simon Stroud, who is secretary of Burnham’s Boat Club.

The boat was stuck fast in the mudA crowd of onlookers gathered on the jetty to watch the ‘rescue’ unfold, but after more than an hour of trying to pull the boat up the beach without success, the group decided to leave the craft to refloat on the evening tide.

Gerald told Burnham-On-Sea.com: “Unfortunately, I misjudged the tide by just 15 minutes and came in on the wrong side of the jetty, which led to the problems.”

The boat was refloated later in the day, just after 6pm, when it was freed from its mud trap.

The boat was safely towed back to the jetty by a local jet skier Meanwhile, in a separate incident on Saturday morning, a family of four holidaymakers was helped back to shore in Burnham Bay after the outboard motor on their boat suffered mechanical problems. The boat was towed back to the jetty by a local jet skier, as pictured here.
