Anglers reel in bumper catches during Burnham sea-fishing competition
More than 60 anglers took to the waters off Burnham in 25 boats on Sunday (April 3rd) to compete in a mammoth sea fishing competition – and they were rewarded with some bumper catches.
The annual event, organised by the Burnham Boat Owners group, attracted competitors from as far away as Poole in Dorset and lasted for more than seven hours.
The overall winner of the event was Tony Tandy from Burnham, who reeled in a 14lb 14oz Thornback Ray and won £180 for his efforts.
In second place was Dave Teather (£140) with a 13lb 6oz Ray, and third prize of £120 went to John May for his 12lb 1oz Ray.
The conger category was won by Andy Reynolds for his capture of an 18lb 17oz eel, while the bass contest was won by David Main of Poole for his 5lb 10oz catch.
Dick Stewart, competition secretary, said the event had been very successful, adding: “We’ve had a good turnout and the weather stayed fine for the whole day. We plan to hold a similar event next year.”
A raffle at the end of the event also helped raise funds for a worthy local cause – a total of £110 was donated to the RNLI.
