Coastguards called out Burnham-On-Sea’s rescue hovercrafts on Monday morning (20th September) to check on the welfare of a man onboard a boat that had run aground on Stert Island.
BARB’s Light Of Elizabeth flew two Coastguard crewmembers out onto the island at 11.30am to check that the man, who was aged in his late 70s, was safe.
Burnham Coastguard Ian Jefferies told Burnham-On-Sea.com: “We found the boat’s owner was fine and had intended to run aground to visit the island, but he had not informed Coastguards of his intentions and had no radio onboard.”
“We always recommend that anyone using a boat should be fully equipped with a radio and keep Coastguards of informed of their intentions.”
One Burnham-On-Sea RNLI lifeboat was also called out during the incident.
