High-flying BMX bikers race into Burnham for national championships

Hundreds of BMX bikers and enthusiasts flocked to Burnham-On-Sea on Sunday for the opening round of the UK’s national championships.

High-flying BMX action during Sunday's event at Burnham-On-Sea450 riders competed in the event at the town’s BMX track in Apex Park.

Watched by hundreds of spectators, the participants skidded, raced and flew around the track during the several rounds.

BMX Club chairman Mike Manaton told Burnham-On-Sea.com the event had been a big success.

“There’s been excellent support. We’ve had riders from across the UK taking part and even some Dutch competitors,” he said.

Burnham-On-Sea BMX rider Marcus BloomfieldTop Burnham rider Marcus Bloomfield, pictured, was clearly enjoying being in the limelight in his home town.

An Olympic hopeful, he was again on top form at Sunday’s event.

The organisers also thanked local residents for their co-operation during a busy weekend at the track.

Mr Manaton added: “An event like this brings such large numbers of people into Burnham that it can only be good for the town as a whole, not just our club.”

Meanwhile, on Saturday evening the British BMX talent team were also in action in the town, performing a demonstration at King Alfred School in front of crowds of enthusiasts.
