Residents invited to have their say on Burnham BMX park’s future

-

Residents in Burnham and Highbridge are being invited to have their say on controversial plans for the future of Burnham-On-Sea’s BMX bike park.

The proposals, from Sedgemoor District Counncil, involve granting Bourne Leisure a 50-year ground lease for the existing BMX site at Apex Park.

Sedgemoor District Council spokeswoman Sam Taylor told Burnham-On-Sea.com: “The land that the BMX Track is situated on within Apex Park is leased from Sedgemoor District Council. The BMX track and land are not available for public use but are used by the club for training and events.”

“The BMX Club would like to expand and are considering relocating to a different site locally, thus terminating their current lease. This proposal would exclude housing developments as the land will not be sold but leased on a long-term basis.”

“The district council – in exchange for offering a 50 year lease to another party for the BMX site – could secure some funding to enhance the facilities in the park, for example creating an all-weather year-round café facility, improving the toilet facilities and/or extending the park building to allow for increased educational and event use.”

“The Friends of Apex Park have been consulted on this proposal and the initial suggestions for improvement projects, should funding be available, were proposed following consultation with the group.”

“The Council is carrying out a consultation to seek the public’s views on this proposal.”

Surveys will be available in the park on Wednesday 5th August from 10am-3pm on the footpath between Marine Drive and Parsons Road (number 8 on the Playday map); on Tuesday 11th August from 5-7pm in the Apex office building in Apex car park; and on Wednesday 19th August from 5-7pm in the Apex office building in Apex car park.

Those unable to attend to complete a survey can complete an online version, available online from later this week, until Thursday 27th August, here.

Once surveys have been returned and the results collated they will form part of a public report to be taken to Sedgemoor District Council’s Executive Committee where a decision will be taken on the next steps.
