Burnham-On-Sea Scouts support BBC Blue Peter campaign

-

Scouts, Beavers and Cubs from Burnham-On-Sea turned dozens of T-shirts into hospital gowns on Saturday (November 14th) to support a BBC Blue Peter appeal for children in developing countries.

The popular kids TV programme has launched an appeal called ‘Send A Smile’, which aims to encourage kids across the UK to make 20,000 hospital gowns.

Jo McGregor, Burnham Cub Scout Leader of the Kingfisher pack, told Burnham-On-Sea.com: “Thousands of children are born each year with a cleft lip or cleft palate, preventing them from eating, speaking or even smiling.”

“In many parts of the world these children are hidden away, prevented from attending school and face an uncertain future. Operation Smile sends teams of volunteer medical professionals to provide free reconstructive surgery.”

“Our children have made 41 gowns by turning unwanted T-shirts into hospital gowns and they will be sent off to help Operation Smile, which will use the gowns during future medical projects.”

The goal of the Blue Peter campaign is to make 20,000 gowns which will save £60,000 – enough money to help pay for 300 surgeries in Guwahati, India.

The campaign also seeks to help children discover a new and interesting culture, learn about the issues that people face in developing countries and have the opportunity to use their creative skills to make a positive difference in children’s lives.
