The Bishop of Bath and Wells made a brief visit to Burnham-On-Sea’s St Andrew’s Church on Wednesday (May 20th) during a marathon 330-mile walk to mark the 1,100th year of the Diocese of Bath and Wells.
The Rt Rev Peter Price was met by vicar Rev Graham Witts and parishioners outside the church on Burnham seafront.
‘Peter’s Progress’, as the walk has been dubbed, will be completed by the Bishop in two months, who is walking every other day.
He started the pilgrimage at the beginning of May and it will end in Glastonbury on 4th July, with a celebration at the Abbey.
Bishop Price said: “Normally I am like everyone else: I rush about, often by car or train, and never get to see the places I pass, or meet the people who live there. This is different.”
Bishop Peter will actually be walking for 33 days over the two months and on the other days he will be performing his usual duties and fulfilling diary engagements. The detailed route is on the 1,100 anniversary website here.
Bath and Wells was formed in 909 AD when it was carved out of the former Sherborne Diocese which used to cover the whole of the South West and was too big to be effective. Bath and Wells now has 570 churches organised in 490 parishes serving 830,000 people.
