Bill explained his rationale to Burnham-On-Sea.com for standing as a Tory: “At District Council level you need to be in a party of strength to make an impact and get actions done. Since 99 times out of 100 I agree with the Conservatives, it therefore makes sense for me to run as a Tory.”
“I’ll remain an independent councillor at Town Council level since the role there is less about politics and more about local issues. I’m not a political man and I just want to see the best for our towns.”
He said he has “no current plans” to move to the Conservatives at Town Council level, although he cannot rule it out. He was previously a Lib Dem councillor and left the party last year, as we reported here.
The Conservatives currently hold the majority on the Town Council with nine councillors while there are five Lib Dems and four independent councilors.
The other candidates in the Highbridge and Burnham Marine by-election on January 24th are Helen Groves (Lib Dem), Ricky Holcombe (Labour), Purple Watkins (Independent) and Sally Williams (Independent).
