Burnham biker gears up to compete in top Silverstone race
A top motorbiker from Burnham-On-Sea is gearing up to race at Silverstone during May where he’ll compete in the latest round of a leading national championship.
After a highly successful start to the season, Dean Nicholls of Basonbridge is lying in first place in the North Gloucester Road Racing Sounds Of Thunder Championship.
He’s competing in two different classes this season, riding two turbo-charged machines.
“One class is the Sound of Thunder in which I ride a Ducati 998 sponsored by Somerset Superbikes of Easton and the other is the open class in which 125s up to 1300s can race,” he told Burnham-On-Sea.com.
“We race a honda CBR 1000rr in this class, sponsored by Joe Bird & Co, Shearcraft Engineering and Southwest Commercials of Highbridge. This is a new bike this year and we are developing it as we go.”
Dean had a tough weekend last week at Darley Moor, near Derby but still came away with some valuable points. “It was frustrating with bad weather and hiccups with the bikes, but we managed to come away with a first place in the qualifier and two third positions in the finals on Saturday and Sunday.”
Now he’s focusing on the big one – Silverstone on Saturday May 7th, which is round 5 of the championship. “We’re hoping for good results. Last year we had a third position there,” he said.
He has high hopes of success, having won all the races in rounds one and two of the Sound Of Thunder class. His overall aim is to finish higher than the fourth place he achieved during the 2004 season.
Remaining races during the 15-round season will be held at major circuits around the country which inclde Brands Hatch, Thruxton, Donnington Park, Cadwell Park and Pembrey.
