Travellers leave field next to Berrow Church after legal action started

-

A large group of travellers left a field next to Berrow Church on Monday where they had been camped since Saturday.

The group of a dozen caravans and vehicles left the land on Monday afternoon after the owners, Burnham and Berrow Golf Club, started legal action.

Talking to Burnham-On-Sea.com, the club’s Managing Secretary, Karen Drake, said: “The travellers left at around 2.30pm after legal steps were taken to get them moved. They had broken into the field.”

“A clean up of some rubbish left behind has been carried out – and fortunately there was no damage. Steps are being taken to ensure they don’t get access here again.”

Two years ago, a large group of travellers set up camp on Berrow Green over the summer, and the Parish Council built a bund around the green to prevent them gaining access.

Burnham-On-Sea’s MP James Heappey is working on a change to the law to prevent travellers illegally trespassing on land, as we reported here. On Friday July 20th he met with several local people in Burnham to discuss the problems.
