Wessex Water has this week admitted that disruptive work to repair a damaged sewer in Burnham-On-Sea is taking ‘longer than planned’, leading to the continuing closure of Berrow Road.
Ian Drury from Wessex Water told Burnham-On-Sea.com this week: “Work to repair the collapsed sewer in Berrow Road is taking longer than we had hoped.”
“Excavations have revealed the damaged section is larger than we thought and due to the sewer being deep below ground tidal waters are hampering us accessing it.”
“Now that the recent high tides have passed we hope to further progress with the work and by the end of next week we should be able to more accurately say when the work will be completed and the road re-opened.”
He added: “We are aware that the diversion route is causing inconvenience to motorists and local residents, but due to the location of the sewer we had no choice but to close the road so repairs can be carried out. We apologise for how long the emergency repairs are taking.”
Burnham-On-Sea.com reported last week how residents of Saxondale Avenue and Golf Links Road are unhappy that large numbers of motorists who would usually use Berrow Road are using their roads as diversions instead.
