75-name petition calls for new pedestrian crossing in Burnham-On-Sea

-

Dozens of concerned residents living along a busy road in Burnham-On-Sea have signed a petition called for a new pedestrian crossing.

Resident Pam McDonald, pictured, has collected 75 signatures in an effort to push Somerset County Council to introduce a zebra crossing at the northern end of Berrow Road, near the junction with Ash Tree Road.

“The petition has been supported the vast majority of people I have asked – everyone living in this area can see why a crossing is needed, particularly given how busy this stretch of road is during the summer,” she told Burnham-On-Sea.com.

In a letter to town councillors last month, she said: “I feel like I am taking my life into my hands to cross this busy road.”

Pam now plans to take the petition to local councils to encourage them to make the changes.

The road is busy with thousands of holidaymakers travelling into Brean over the summer months and residents in the Ash Tree Road area currently have to walk almost a mile to the nearest crossing at the Texaco garage.

She added parts of Berrow Road only have grass verges and no pavements, which further affects safety.

Town Council Clerk Denise Emery said: “It will all come down to money and whether funding is available from the County Council.”

Burnham North County Councillor Peter Burridge-Clayton said: “I think the only way we could receive funding for a request like this is through the ‘small improvement scheme’ which county councillors access. If this council thinks this is a good idea then I will put it forward. There is another job in the queue – and that’s to upgrade the crossing on Berrow Road near Rectory Road. That one came first, but I would put this one down if members feel it’s a suitable idea.”

Anyone who wishes to add their name to the petition, can get in contact here.
