Proposals to extend a Burnham-On-Sea residential home into a block of 11 flats have this week been turned down by Sedgemoor District Council amid concerns that the scheme is ‘unsympathetic’.
Plans to create 11 self-contained elderly people’s flats at 139 Berrow Road – currently Newton Lodge Residential Home – have been rejected.
“The design of the proposed extension is unsympathetic and out of character with the vernacular character of the existing building, and contrary to policies in the Sedgemoor District Local Plan,” a council spokesman told Burnham-On-Sea.com.
The plans also attracted nine letters of objection from local residents, which were considered by the council.
The application covered the change of use, conversion and extension of the residence to 11 self-contained flats plus the formation of nine extra parking spaces, totalling 18.
