Wessex Water has this week defended its choice of diversion routes during the three-week closure of Burnham-On-Sea’s Berrow Road.
Residents along Saxondale Avenue and Links Gardens are unhappy at the huge amount of traffic passing their homes as motorists navigate their way around the large section of Berrow Road that is closed due to emergency sewer repairs.
One resident in Links Gardens, who asked not to be named, told Burnham-On-Sea.com: “These usually quiet back roads have been transformed into a chaotic diversion route with a non-stop stream of traffic passing at all times of the day and night.”
“Wessex Water should be doing far much more to discourage traffic from using minor roads like these. The diversions that have been put in place seem to be very confusing.”
But Wessex Water spokesman Ian Drury told Burnham-On-Sea.com: “We do understand the concerns, but it’s unfortunately impossible to find a diversion route that keeps all residents happy.”
“We have road closure and diversion signs along Berrow Road and also placed right back to the motorway junction.”
He added: “We do apologise for any inconvenience caused by these emergency repairs.”
He said the work is “going well” and that a completion date is expected to be known early next week.
The firm previously said that the road would be closed for up to three weeks following a collapse of a deep underground sewer pipe.
