A busy road between Burnham-On-Sea and Berrow is closed for nine days from until February 17th while Wessex Water carries out sewer repairs, which it has this week defended as ‘essential’.
A 22-metre long stretch of Berrow Road, near the junction with Golf Links Road, is shutting and motorists are being directed along a nine-mile diversion route around East Brent and Brent Knoll instead.
A Wessex Water spokesperson said: “This essential work is being carried out to divert a surface water sewer and protect properties from flooding. We appreciate Berrow Road is a main road through Burnham-On-Sea and apologise for any inconvenience caused.”
First Bus says its services will be running along Berrow Road as usual, along either side of the roadworks, however passengers will have to get off and walk through to get the connection.
Wessex Water’s work will see the road closure in place until Tuesday 17th February.
But the closure has been criticised by local residents, with Berrow Parish Council Clerk Lynn Smith telling Burnham-On-Sea.com: “The Wessex Water closure is going to cause a large amount of disruption for those travelling between Burnham and Berrow and Brean.”
“It will mean, for example, that parents of children at Berrow School could have an extra 15-20 minutes of journey time each day for those living in Burnham. Many people have been in contact with us at the Parish Council to express how unhappy they are and we will be sending our comments on to the company.”
Work on a new pedestrian crossing in the same area of Berrow Road, which does not require a road closure, will start on Monday 23rd February.
