Berrow loses TV phone poll contest but could still win £50k funding

-

Berrow’s hopes of winning a TV competition to secure £50,000 of National Lottery funding for a new play area in the village suffered a blow this evening (Tuesday, November 24th) when the winner of the latest round of the competition was announced – but the village could still win the cash later this week.

As we first reported earlier this month, the parish council’s application for People’s Millions funding to refurbish the play area on the Village Green was short-listed – but to get the cash, the Berrow campaigners needed to win Monday’s TV telephone vote, overseen by ITV West.

Thousands of votes were cast by local people, but ITV West announced on Tuesday evening’s news programme that the project to create the ‘Berrow Empowering Play Area’, pictured above, had not been successful.

However, Berrow Parish Council Clerk Lynn Smith told Burnham-On-Sea.com: “We lost Monday’s vote to Newton Poppleford, but we could still win the money later this week when one of the losing projects that collected the most votes will receive £50,000.”

“All hopes now rest on Thursday night’s programme. We’re really disappointed not to have won outright, but have fingers crossed for Thursday. Many thanks to everyone who voted for us – your support has been superb!”
