Rumours that a village pub near Burnham-On-Sea is to be turned into a Tesco Express have been quashed by the estate agents handling the sale of the property.
The Berrow Inn has twice failed to sell at auction over the past year and last month went on sale for £325,000 with Exeter-based estate agents Jones Lang LaSalle.
Rumours circulating in the village over the past week suggested that the supermarket giant was considering taking it on as a mini store.
However, a spokesman for Jones Lang LaSalle, Michael Easton, told Burnham-On-Sea.com: “We are still actively seeking a buyer. There has been some interest but not a great deal so far. We have not been approached by Tesco.”
Local residents are concerned that the property may be bought by developers and turned into flats, taking away the pub as a community asset. “No-one wants to see this pub shut down – it’s an important part of village life,” resident John Presley told Burnham-On-Sea.com.
