Concerned residents in Berrow fear the village’s pub could soon be knocked down and replaced with new homes if it is sold at an auction later this month.
The Berrow Inn is due to be auctioned on July 29th and has a guide price of £350,000 – £380,000.
While the property is being marketed as a pub with an alcohol license, the sale board outside states that the pub has ‘significant development potential’.
Villager Keith Verrier is one of several residents who are concerned about what the future holds for the building.
He told Burnham-On-Sea.com: “We don’t want to be without our village pub. Our fear is that the property is going to be sold off and turned into a block of flats or houses. We don’t want to have to travel to Burnham or Brean to use a pub – we want our local pub to be the social hub of the village.”
“We have recently lost our last fast food take-away when the owner moved to Brean and losing the pub would be so damaging and sad for Berow.”
Another nearby resident, John Presley, told Burnham-On-Sea.com: “This doesn’t only affect people in Berrow – it is the only pub between Brean and Burnham. It is an important social meeting place and should not be sold off and developed.”
The owner of the pub told Burnham-On-Sea.com he has no comment to make.
