Work is set to begin on building a grass bank around Berrow Village Green with the aim of reducing the likelihood that travellers will set up camp there.
Berrow Parish Council said this week it has placed a contract with a local company to start the work on building the bank during March. It comes after travellers set up camp on the Green last summer, as pictured.
Clerk Lynn Smith told Burnham-On-Sea.com: “At its meeting on 13th February 2017, Berrow Parish Council considered the quotations received for the installation of the bank along the front of Berrow Village Green and agreed to accept the quotation from JD Pope & Sons Ltd.”
“A meeting was held with a representative from JD Pope this week on site when we were advised that this work would be started within 2 – 3 weeks and would take approximately 1 – 2 weeks to complete.”
“During this time, there may be instances where sections of the pavement alongside the Green may be inaccessible and we apologise for any inconvenience this may cause.”
“The bank will have several gaps in it to allow access to wheelchairs and pushchairs/prams but these gaps will be no more than 1.2m wide and so not wide enough for vehicles.”
“A section at the end of the Green will not have a bank but will have a removable barrier installed to allow access for our grounds maintenance contractor. This barrier will be lockable with an internal locking system.”
“JD Pope will be erecting temporary posts and plastic fencing around each of the mounds to allow the earth to settle and the grass seed to become established. Please could we ask that you keep children and animals off of the mounds whilst this is in place.”
