Sunday August 18th will see the official relaunch of Berrow Football Club following an 18-month hiatus.
The club will mark the 50th anniversary of its formation with a charity fun day and a special match to commemorate the life of former player and club chairman Colin Dyer. It will be held from 12 mid-day at Berrow’s playing fields.
“Colin, who lost his brave fight with cancer 20 years ago, worked tirelessly to get the club the amazing facilities that they enjoy today and was a huge player in the formation of the club 50 years ago,” said a spokesman.
“The club felt it was important for the new players, who will have not even been born before Colin’s passing, to know the roots of the club to carry on its legacy in the spirit that he instilled.”
“At the core of the 35-strong squad is the successful Berrow Juniors, U16 team led by Steve Puddy and Jaea Wilkinson.”
“Steve and Jaea are running the two new teams one of which plays on Saturday in the Weston District League and one on Sunday in the Bridgwater District Sunday League.”
“This young squad is enhanced by players who also played for Berrow Juniors and didn’t continue after junior football and a sprinkling of experience players who played in the Berrow FC squad over the years.”
The day will run from 12 mid-day and there will be a football match between Berrow FC and Berrow Legends for the Colin Dyer Trophy.
“Running alongside that will be children’s entertainment and activities, a face-painter, BBQ, refreshments and attendance from BARB, RNLI, Police and Berrow JFC, plus more.”
“Berrow will be showcasing their new kits that have been generously funded by our main team sponsors, May Roofing and Incyte International, with further support from our family of sponsors including Prim N Proper, Glayshers Landscaping, Ref Support and Abbey Cabs.”
“Colin’s family, wife Carol, daughter Rachel and son Matt, whom also gave many years of voluntary service to the club, have nominated Marie Curie and Macmillan as their chosen charities.”
“We hope to develop further teams in the future including Vets and Walking football and are keen to hear from anyone who wants to kick these off.”
