Berrow Football Club marked their 50th anniversary on Sunday (August 18th) with a hugely successful and well supported family fun day.
The club kicked the day off by hosting their sponsors as a sign of appreciation to them for their help in the resurrection of the club.
With a fully stocked bar, barbecue and the weather largely being kind to all that attended, the day was a fantastic success.
Club spokesman Chris Warner, who organised the event, said: “The main attraction of the day was the Berrow FC XI Vs Berrow Legends game for the Colin Dyer Trophy, allowing both sides to showcase the new kits.”
“The kits were kindly supplied by sponsors Eric May of May Roofing, Malcolm Greenhalgh of Incyte International, Sarah Glaysher of Prim N Proper and Tony Glaysher of Glayshers landscaping.”
“The game itself was quite a spectacle, with the youthful Berrow XI side running out 3-2 winners.
Berrow XI dominated early proceedings, however it was the Legends, lead by the evergreen Ryan McErlain, attacking with the wind who took the lead through Will Conway, who latched on to a Steve Warren long ball.”
“The Legends using the ball intelligently moved the ball around their youthful opposition and had them chasing shadows for long periods and forced 2 good stops from the BFC XI keeper Chris Warner, the stand out being a stunning save from an equally stunning volley from Berrows 2nd all time top scorer Dave Keirle.”
“The young Berrow side weathered the storm, and on the stroke of half time Ben Hemingway Arnold hit an absolute thunderbolt the hit the bar and ricocheted in from 30 yards.”
“Second half was mainly one way traffic with Legends keeper Ian Puddy keeping them in the game.
However he was helpless when Mark Bennett hit an unstoppable strike into the top corner.”
“The trophy was all but won when Morgan Sealey curled a free kick past Puddy, but the legends had the final say when all time top scorer Simon Baunton rolled back the years to confidently tuck the ball past Warner with five to go.”
The Dyer family chose Chris Warner as the first recipient of the Dyer family trophy as the standout player of the day, not only for his performance in goal, but for his efforts in organising the day.
After the game the Dyer family presented the trophy to the winning captain Tom Edwards.
In turn, the club presented Colin Dyer’s wife, Carol, with a personalised Berrow shirt to mark 50 years of the club’s birth.
The club raised £300 for the Dyer families chosen charities Macmillan and Marie Curie.
