Legal wrangle causes three-week wait for removal of crash wreckage

-

This overturned car should finally be taken away from Berrow Village Green this week after three weeks of legal discussions by the Parish Council.

The wreckage of the red Nissan has been in place since a crash at 2am on February 14th when the 23 year-old driver from Hertfordshire lost control. He was later arrested on suspicion of drink driving, and driving without insurance.

Getting the vehicle removed has proved hugely difficult, says Berrow Parish Council.

Council Clerk Lynn Smith told Burnham-On-Sea.com: “It has been a nightmare to get it removed – Sedgemoor District Council has served a notice on it and it should be removed later this week.”

“The car was insured and on private land so we had to contact the registered keeper to request it be removed. We had to give the driver seven days to respond, however our letter was returned with ‘not known at this address’.”

“So we’ve therefore sought the council’s help to get a formal notice served on it, which expires this Thursday.”

“Unfortunately, there is nothing more that could be done to get it removed quicker. Many hours of time has put in by the Parish Council to get it taken away.”

One resident, who asked not be named, said: “It is a terrible sight on our village green – a real eyesore – but the council has been doing all it can to get it removed.”
