This group of hardy conservation volunteers braved heavy rain and strong winds to spend Sunday (February 28th) tidying up Berrow’s sand dunes.
The Sedgemoor Conservation Volunteers made their annual visit to the nature reserve to plant marram and clear sea buckthorn as part of a day of conservation work.
Cagoules and waterproofs were out in force – but the team but a brave face on it.
Sedgemoor District Council’s landscape officer, Janette Burton, who was among the group, told Burnham-On-Sea.com at the event: “The weather’s definitely been against today but I am really impressed with the turnout and thank everyone for their support.”
The sea buckthorn has spread over about half of the area of the dunes, leading to the loss of much of the grassland habitat – hence the need for the regular clean-ups.
The reserve is owned and managed by Sedgemoor District Council and is included within the Berrow Dunes Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI).
