Suspected ‘wartime ordnance device’ causes Berrow beach to be cordoned off by Police

-

The discovery of a suspected ‘wartime ordnance device’ washed up on Berrow beach caused a section of the sands to be cordoned off by Police this week.

Officers were called to the beach on Tuesday afternoon and a large area was taped off north of the parking area as a safety precaution.

A beach warden raised the alarm after a beach walker had reported finding the unusual item on the high tide line, pictured below.

Burnham-On-Sea Police were called to investigate and they sent several photos of the device to the army bomb disposal team to investigate before a potential visit.

A Police spokesman told Burnham-On-Sea.com: “At 12.24pm we received a report of a suspicious item on Berrow Beach.”

“Officers attended and, after consultation with experts, it was believed the item was a makeshift buoy which is now due to be removed by beach wardens later this week.”
