Eighty volunteers supported a newly-formed group’s bid to clean Berrow beach of litter on Saturday (March 10th).
The new Friends of Berrow Beach held the first of a series of planned beach cleans, with organisers delighted by the turnout.
Large amounts of plastic waste and litter were removed by the litter-pickers over the course of two hours.
The Berrow group is being led by Honour Greenslade, Sue Meads and Tracie Philpott with the supported of Coastal Community Officer Tanya Cox.
Honour, pictured below with Tanya, told Burnham-On-Sea.com: “We are delighted with the turnout for this first clean-up at Berrow. Litter is just as much a problem on Berrow beach as it is in Burnham – litter doesn’t know any boundaries.”
She added that the Co-Op in Berrow and Boots in Burnham have pledged their support, giving supplies and first aid kits to the new group.
Tanya, from the Litter Free Coasts & Seas Somerset project, told Burnham-On-Sea.com: “It’s fantastic that a second group has been set up in Berrow to remove litter and we thank the residents for coming forward to create it.”
Young volunteers and families were among the army of litter pickers who gathered outside Berrow Church before making their way across the golf course to the beach.
The group intends to meet monthly, collecting plastic rubbish washed up along the beach.
