Eight holiday flats approved at former Burnham mental health centre

-

A former mental health centre in Burnham-On-Sea which was controversially shut down and sold by the NHS last year will be turned into a block of holiday apartments by its new owner.

Sedgemoor District Council has this week granted permission for Belmont House in Technical Street, pictured, to be transformed into the new development.

The centre was shut down by NHS Somerset last August despite a long-running campaign by patients, their families and councillors to save it. It was sold off for just £170,000 in December, prompting claims from local councillors that tax payers had been ‘short changed’.

Paul Martin Associates, acting on behalf of owner Mr S Singh, submitted an application to Sedgemoor District Council for Full Planning Permission to convert the building into eight holiday apartments.

The district council’s planning department has now approved the plans, subject to the property being used for holiday accommodation only and not occupied as a person’s sole or main residence.

The three-storey property is located in the centre of Burnham and covers 380 square metres (4,090 sq ft) with six car parking spaces.
