Plans to turn former Burnham care home into 12 homes approved

-

Controversial plans to demolish a former care home in Burnham-On-Sea and replace it with the new 12-home development pictured above have been given approval this week.

Earlier this year, town councillors raised strong objections over the proposals to demolish the former Beechwood House Rest Home at 64-66 Berrow Road and replace it with eight 3-bedroom houses and four 2-bedroom houses.

But at a meeting on Tuesday, Sedgemoor District Council’s Development Control Committee granted approval to the property’s developer, Property Link South Limited.

Committee Chairman Bob Filmer told Burnham-On-Sea.com: “The committee felt the proposed design is in keeping with what has been built in this area before. In terms of height, it will be lower.”

“Furthermore, the parking facilities will provide more than one space per dwelling and all access to the site has been moved to Berrow Road, not Player’s Lane which runs along the rear of the site and is unadopted by the County Council.”

The approval is subject to an S106 agreement being signed between Sedgemoor District Council and Property Link within one month to secure financial contributions towards the off-site provision of childrens play space and outdoor sports facilities.

Town councillors lodged ‘strong objections’ on the grounds of over-development of the site, inadequate parking, lack of amenity space and privacy issues.

Beechwood House Rest Home closed in 2008, as we reported here at the time.
