Wet weather failed to dampen the spirits of almost 100 walkers who took part in the annual fundraising beach walk between Burnham-On-Sea and Brean Down on Sunday (May 25th).
The 15-mile beach walk, which is held each May to raise money for the Alzheimer’s Society, started and finished at Burnham Pier, taking in Berrow and Brean Cove along the scenic route.
Organiser Mike Barsby told Burnham-On-Sea.com that although numbers were hit by the weather, he was pleased by the turbout.
“We had a crowd of 98 walkers, which was really good considering the poor weather,” he said. “A further 25 walkers decided to do the walk next weekend instead.”
“We had a good mixture of ages which included a 86-year-old man who walked as far as Berrow. One or two people had a few blisters, but everyone enjoyed the day.”
Water-proof coats and umbrellas were required for part of the walk, when walkers including locals Lynne Baillie and Carol Gadd (pictured above) strode along the sand to Brean.
Mr Barsby said he expected that approximately £1,500 would have been raised for The Alzheimer’s Society from Sunday’s event, although a final figure won’t be known for several weeks.
“Alzheimer’s can affect anyone – statistics show that 1 in 4 people know or have known someone with Alzeimers or Dementia,” added Mike.
The walkers strode along the sea wall at the start of Sunday’s walk.
The Smart family from Burnham were among those taking part. They were raising funds in memory of two family members who were long-time Alzheimers sufferers.
The walkers streamed onto the beach at Burnham for the 15-mile walk.
Silhouetted on the horizon, the walkers passed Burnham’s lighthouse.
Jade the dog was among the four-legged participants taking part in Sunday’s event which saw the walkers wrapped up in water-proof coats.
The walkers disappeared onto the horizon as they made their way past Berrow.
