Walkers are being encouraged to step forward to take part in the annual fundraising walk between Burnham-On-Sea jetty and Brean Down and back to raise money for the Alzheimer’s Society.
The 15-mile beach walk will start at 11.30am on Sunday May 25th from Burnham Pier and will include time for a picnic or lunch in the Brean Cove Café. A shorter eight-mile walk is also available to the entrance of Berrow Beach and return.
Almost 100 people, some dressed in colourful fancy dress, took part in last year’s walk and organiser Mike Barsby hopes the number of participants will be around 150 this year.
Mr Barsby said: He added: “Previous beach walks have been very enjoyable events with a relaxed atmosphere and the event attracts people of all ages and abilities. The distance is quite manageable for most people and it’s a great opportunity to get some exercise and see parts of our beach that you may not have seen before. Apart from enjoying the walk and the company of others the main purpose is to beat last years walk which raised over £900 for the disability charity Scope.”
He added that money raised at the event will be going to a very good cause. “Alzheimer’s can affect anyone – statistics show that one in four people know or have known someone with Alzeimers or Dementia. In my case it was my mother, Joyce. Her memory deteriorated so badly that in the last months of her life she could not remember the names of her close family.”
“So please get a group of friends and family together and join us on the 25th May. The earlier you sign up the more time you will have to get lots of sponsors! By raising funds for the Alzheimer’s Society I hope that more support can be provided for the carers of lovely people like my mother as well as allowing the Society to continue its research for a cure.”
For those with a competitive nature, medals will be awarded to the first ten walkers who arrive at Brean Down and all participants will be presented a Beach Walk 2008 certificate and offered refreshments at the finish line.
