Brean beach cordoned off after ‘suspicious metal object’ found in sand
Part of Brean beach was sealed off by Coastguards on Monday (August 10th) after a metal detector enthusiast found a suspicious metal object in the sands.
The beach warden alerted Burnham Coastguards who were quickly on scene and cordoned off a large area of the beach around the object.
Burnham Coastguard Station Officer Dave Welland said: “It’s always better to be safe rather than sorry with objects like this when they are found.”
“The metal detector user came across the large metal object two feet under the surface of the beach and did the right thing in letting the beach warden know. It measured about 18 inches long and had various electrical wires hanging out of it at one end.”
“We sent several photos and full details to the Army Bomb Disposal Team and they then analysed it and confirmed that it was in fact harmless and was probably a rusty car part.”
Several explosives have been found along the coastline in recent years, and this year five potentially explosive flares have been washed up on local beaches.
In 2008, a huge 700kg German sea mine was found on Stert Island opposite Burnham-On-Sea, which was detonated by the Navy’s bomb squad, as we reported here.
