High tides have washed away sand from the bottom of the main disabled access ramp onto Burnham-On-Sea’s beach, leaving a steep drop into mud and water at the end.
The concrete walkway next to Burnham-On-Sea Pavilion is intended to give disabled beach visitors access onto the beach using wheelchairs and mobility scooters.
However it’s curently unusable after sand was washed away from the base of the ramp during the latest high tides, leaving a step into a pool of water and mud, as pictured here.
Claire Faun from Sedgemoor District Council told Burnham-on-Sea.com: “We will wait until the high tides have finished and then assess what needs to be done.”
Meanwhile, disabled beach visitors can still get access onto Burnham-On-Sea beach via the town’s jetty and at Burnham Sailing Club.
The Environment Agency – which maintains Burnham’s sea wall and steps – previously brought in contractors during October 2016 to carry out repairs for the storm-damaged walkway onto Burnham-On-Sea beach.
