‘Clean up Burnham-On-Sea beach’, calls angry resident

-

A Burnham-On-Sea resident has this week called on the district council to clean up a rubbish-strewn stretch of the town’s beach.

James Spottiswoode, pictured, got in contact with Burnham-On-Sea.com to express his “disgust” at the state of the beach between Allandale Road and the North Esplanade, which will soon be visited by crowds of holidaymakers over the summer season.

“During this week’s hot weather many locals and tourists have been surrounded by rubbish as they try to enjoy a leisurely time on what I would describe as Burnham’s front doorstep,” said James.

His spot check of the beach has found beer cans, bottles, boxes, plastic sheeting, discarded clothing and other waste lying on the sand.

“The amount of rubbish gathered on the beach between Allandale Road and Maddock’s Slade is a disgrace,” added Mr Spottiswoode.

“I know that the district council is facing financial problems, but the state of Burnham beach is crucial for attracting tourists, who spend millions of pounds each year in our area. The town needs this beach to be clean.”

Sedgemoor District Council spokeswoman Claire Faun said the concerns would be passed to its cleaning team, but she defended the cleaning schedule.

“We do clean the main parts of Burnham beach on a daily basis and, along with the town council, have invested in extra cleaning along in the town and The Esplanade over the past year,” she told Burnham-On-Sea.com.

“We do need beach users to help us by taking their rubbish away with them and putting it into a bin.”
