The “disgraceful” state of Burnham-On-Sea’s beach was highlighted by an angry town councillor this week as he called for action to clean it up.
Cllr John Morgan wants more regular council cleaning of the beach between Maddock’s Slade and the town’s low lighthouse.
“I walked along this stretch of beach at the weekend and it was absolute disgrace,” he told Monday evening’s town council meeting.
“We have one and a half million tourists visiting us every year at this time so why, when you go abroad, are the beaches of holiday resorts cleaned every morning and yet in Burnham we can only rarely clean parts of our beach?”
“More of the business rates paid by our local companies should be used to support local tourism,” he said.
Town clerk Eileen Shaw said she and a group of business leaders had recently toured the town to identify areas of Burnham that needed improvement and she said “we found several areas are not being properly cleaned.”
Doug Bamsey, Corporate Director of Sedgemoor District Council, said he would take up the matter with his council’s Clean Surroundings Team.
It comes just a week after firms at Burnham Chamber of Trade’s AGM also highlighted the problem of dirty pavements and streets in the town.
