Burnham-On-Sea wins top beach award

-

A new award highlighting England’s best beaches has recommended Burnham-On-Sea as an ideal place for paddling and building sandcastles.

The resort was one of 73 winners in the Quality Coast Awards run by environmental charity, Encams.

The awards, which look at the different needs of beach users, also include best places for a dip, a nice stroll or a bit of coastal isolation.

Each winning beach also meets strict criteria for cleanliness and safety.

The Quality Coast Award is a brand new beach award which recognises the diversity and quality of England’s coastline and commends those beaches that can offer the best cleanliness, facilities and standards for the type of visitor their sandy stretch attracts.

Graham Newing, Resorts Officer for Sedgemoor District Council told Burnham-On-Sea.com: “We are thrilled at this award. Many people take the beach and its cleanliness for granted.”

“At Sedgemoor, we employ staff, such as life guards and beach cleaners to help visitors and residents enjoy the beach. We also organise the letting of beach entertainment such as Punch and Judy, ice-creams, bucket and spades, trampolining, donkey/pony rides and bouncy castles.”

“We have refurbished the sea-front conveniences and are always looking at ways to improve the town. It all adds up to a wonderful place to spend a day or even just an hour to take in some fresh air.”

Burnham Beach also features on the new website. This is the first time beach lovers have been given the opportunity to choose the coastal destination which best suits their needs. By selecting whether they intend to go in the water, take their dog, require disabled facilities or parking nearby – the site then matches them to the most appropriate beach.
