Burnham-On-Sea’s youth centre has this week thanked those who have donated £28,000 to enable a long-awaited roof repair project to begin.
The Burnham Area Youth Centre in Cassis Close was built in 1966 and its roof has suffered regular leaks during heavy rain for years.
The centre’s volunteers have had to keep patching it up while a fundraising campaign to gather enough cash for a new roof has been underway.
At the BAY Centre AGM last night (Wednesday May 15th), it was revealed that £28,452 has been raised to allow the work to finally begin. It includes significant sums from Sedgemoor District Council and Burnham and Highbridge Town Council.
One of those involved in leading the fundraising, Ian Jefferies, told Burnham-On-Sea.com: “We are all relieved and very pleased that the work is able to go ahead after two years of fundraising. Thanks go to Sedgemoor District Council, the Town Council, Moose Lodge, Dreamscheme and Rotary Club plus the many individuals who have made donations.”
BAY Centre President Cllr Neville Jones said it was a “significant milestone” for the centre and added that the new watertight roof should soon be completed.
During the AGM, a re-dedication of the centre’s training wing was also held in memory of its recently deceased former Chair, Di Monaghan, who shared so much of her life within the building. Her husband, Tony, thanked the committee for their support over many years.
John Alexendar, from Burnham Dreamscheme, also gave an update on the brand new comnunity garden at the centre, which is set to open on May 28th.
