A well-known hotel near Burnham-On-Sea is set to change hands after closing down earlier this month.
The Battleborough Grange Hotel – which is located on the slopes of Brent Knoll – has been shut for several days and is not answering calls.
The 23-bed hotel’s lease is currently being advertised and the estate agent confirmed to Burnham-On-Sea.com this week that it is “under offer with a sale proceeding.”
With the sudden closure of the hotel, many future guests have been left in a quandary, especially for those with weddings and other functions.
One, Karen Puddy, told Burnham-On-Sea.com: “My daughter was due to be married on 9th September at Battleborough Grange, but we received an email on Sunday 20th August from the owner saying that they had gone into liquidation.”
“Prior meetings had been held there and two weeks ago she shared her concerns with the staff after warnings were aired on Facebook. The staff dealing with her wedding arrangements reassured her that her special day would go ahead as planned.”
“We are now playing a tug of war with the insurance company over payment, and we can’t book another venue until that is sorted. So much for the happiest time of your lives, I feel devastated for my daughter.”
Other local hoteliers in the Burnham area have expressed their shock at the news. Anna and James Brown at Batch Country House in Lympsham commented: “We would like to express our sadness at hearing of the current closure of Battleborough Grange Country Hotel. Understandably there are many couples left upset and angry by this news.”
“We have already welcomed a lovely couple to Batch Country House and are now planning their special day. Although we are very busy, with only selected dates available, we will try to help and advise any couples left without a venue as much as we can.”
And a spokesman at Rookery Manor said it is “saddened” that the hotel has shut, adding that it “understands the inconvenience and heartache this will cause for the many brides and grooms who were due to wed there in the coming months.”
Burnham-On-Sea.com invited the hotel’s owner to comment further but had received no response at publication time.
