Turf-cutting ceremony marks start of Burnham-On-Sea rugby club project

-

A long-awaited £250,000 project to redevelop Burnham Rugby Club’s changing rooms has been launched with a turf cutting ceremony.

Sedgemoor District Council chairman Jane Moreton led the event at the BASC Ground alongside the club’s committee and Burnham Mayor Derick Cooper.

Treasurer Peter Gaylard said: “It’s brilliant the project has started. Everyone is delighted we will soon have top quality facilities and no more crowded, 30-year-old changing rooms.”

The project, which will take approximately four months to complete, includes the creation of three new changing rooms, the refurbishment of three of the four existing ones and the introduction of a separate referee’s changing room.

Funding for the scheme has come from several sources. Waste management company Viridor’s Landfill Communities Fund gave a whopping £115,000.

And other cash came from the RFU (£100,000), Sedgemoor District council (£35,000), Somerset County Council (£10,000), and the town council (£100).

Richard House, owner of Holiday Resort Unity and Brean Leisure Park, also committed £11,500 since Viridor said its cash would only be provided if a backer from the community matched its donation by 10 per cent.
