Fire crews from Burnham-On-Sea and across the region battled a huge blaze in three barns near Woolavington in the early hours of this morning (Sunday, October 3rd).

Firefighters were called to the storage barns in Whitchley Drove, near Woolavington, at 1.20am after nearby residents reported seeing the flames shooting into the air.

More than 1,000 tonnes of hay and straw were destroyed by the huge blaze, which could be seen in the night sky as far away as Highbridge.

“A large orange glow and a mushroom-shaped plume of smoke was clearly visible from the south side of Highbridge,” eyewitness Jason Adams told Burnham-On-Sea.com.

Fire engines from Bridgwater, Burnham, Yeovil, Glastonbury, Martock, Nether Stowey and Street were called to the scene.

The fire crews managed to save two flat-bed trailers and a separate barn, which were smouldering.

The cause of the fire is yet to be determined and police are investigating whether it was deliberately set alight.

“The cause of the fire is under investigation and three barns have been totally destroyed,” said a fire spokesman.
