Huge barge sails past Burnham-On-Sea to deliver Hinkley machinery
A huge 80 metre long barge manoeuvred its way past Burnham-On-Sea this week, providing walkers along the town’s seafront with an unusual sight.
The tug Indus and tow Terra Marique entered the Parrett Estuary to deliver some heavy machinery for Hinkley Point power station.
The huge barge, which is one of the largest vessels seen in Burnham bay for several years, had come down from Heysham in Lancs.
It manoeuvred off Burnham-On-Sea for approximately 45 minutes during the morning tide on July 24 before proceeding to a berth at Combwich (pictured).
The floor of the The Terra Marique‘s hold was raised up and then, once level with the quay, the load was driven off.
The tug and tow were very restricted in their ability to manoeuvre off Burnham-On-Sea and, therefore, all craft were instructed to keep well clear.
The barge sailed out of the bay again at 22:30 on July 25th.
