Burnham-On-Sea hovercraft called to ‘stranded’ mud walkers in Weston

-

Burnham-On-Sea’s rescue hovercraft was called to Weston on Friday evening (May 5th) after several people were reported to be in difficulty in beach mud.

BARB’s crewmembers were called out shortly after 7pm by Coastguards when several walkers were spotted in thick mud near Weston’s Grand Pier.

BARB’s Spirit Of Lelaina 2 hovercraft was taken by road to Weston and was ready to be launched.

Two groups of people who were understood to be attempting to reach the sea on an outgoing tide by walking across the mud were guided back to safety.

“We were relieved that the two groups of people managed to get back to the shoreline safely. The first informant did the right thing in dialling 999 and asking for the Coastguard as soon as there was concern for the welfare of them,” said a BARB spokesman. “We would always prefer to be called out and stood down rather than receiving a late call-out that may put someone’s life in danger.”
