Crowds head to Santa’s grotto in Burnham-On-Sea, raising over £2,000

Hundreds of families headed to Burnham-On-Sea’s hovercraft station over the weekend to see Father Christmas in his grotto.

The popular annual event, which was held on Saturday and Sunday, saw Santa greeting children and their families, and handing out gifts while raising funds for the work of BARB Search & Rescue, which runs the town’s rescue hovercrafts.

Among the visitors was Burnham’s Mayor and Mayoress Bill and Frances Hancock, and Town Crier Alistair Murray, pictured above. There were also vists by MP James Heappey and his family, and Burnham’s former MP Tessa Munt.

Stalls were also set up inside the hovercraft station, selling a wide range of Christmas items, alongside raffles and tombolas for BARB, raising around £2,000 in total.

“BARB relies solely on donations to carry out its work and this is a key fundraiser for us, so we are hugely grateful to everyone who came along during the weekend to support the event and also to our volunteers for all their time over the two days,” says a spokesman.

BARB Search & Rescue has been operational for 25 years in Burnham-On-Sea. Its team of volunteers is on-call 24 hours a day to assist with incidents.

During 2017, the charity has been called out 42 times to incidents ranging from missing people searches to rescues of people stuck in mud.
