Concerned residents living on the outskirts of Burnham-On-Sea fear plans to start banger racing in a local field will cause a sharp increase in noise and traffic problems.
The field, which is located next to the A38 at Edithmead close to the M5 junction 22, is being prepared for its first banger racing event later in April.
District councillor Bob Filmer, whose ward covers the area, told Burnham-On-Sea.com: “I have been contacted by a number of local residents in the Edithmead area who are very concerned at the proposed use of the field for banger racing.”
“They are worried about the noise of the racing, which I understand is due to be held on Sundays and Bank Holiday Mondays – times that were specifically denied to the Speedway when they applied for planning permission because of the impact on local residents.”
“Concerns have also been raised regarding the residents and visitors at the Windmill Caravan Park and other nearby caravan parks as obviously any noise impact is likely to be greater to people in a mobile home or caravan than those in a house.”
“They are also concerned as to how the road network will cope with the traffic generated and the fact that they knew nothing about it until the banners appeared along the roadside.”
He added: “No planning application was lodged because landowners can use agricultural land for non-agricultural uses for up to 28 days or 14 days if it involves motor sports.”
“A number of residents have been making contact with Sedgemoor District Council Planning and Environment departments, the county highways department and the local police to raise their concerns and see if those organisations can help avoid any possible problems arising.”
