Dozens of home-made cakes and pies went on display when 40 local bakers competed in The Great Burnham Bake Off during the town’s popular Food Festival on Saturday.

Cathy Bird, pictured above, won the overall champion’s trophy after her delicious chicken and ham pie was judged to be the best entry in the show.

The bakers battled it out for the top spot – with the entries being assessed by Conservative parliamentary candidate James Heappey, young chef Madeline Francis and Dr Jane Guise, CEO of the Bath and West Show.

The competition, sponsored by Burnham’s Positive Wealth Creation, also saw prizes presented to Katie Lawson (bread), Tricia Taylor (professional cake), Iris Michin (individual cake), Cathy Bird (individual pie), Kendra Kington ( bread) and Rachel and Sophia Hurley (family cake).

Among the cake entries was one of Burnham lighthouse and the town’s rescue hovercraft, right, by Burnham’s MP Tessa Munt which was judged by her election rival James Heappey!

James told Burnham-On-Sea.com after judging: “Her cake was superb – it tasted great. She really can make super shortbread. It’s been a lot of fun judging.”

“The entries were of an incredibly high standard overall and I was really impressed with the creativity shown. It was a great event to judge, although I am feeling rather full and probably won’t need to eat for a week!”

Sponsor Alex Turco from Positive Wealth Creation said: “We are really pleased to be involved in the Bake Off again. It was great to see the event so well supported again. A big thank you goes to everyone who entered, the judges and the festival organisers.”
