Delicious bakes impress judges at the 2015 Great Burnham Bake-Off

-

Dozens of home-made cakes, sponges and bread went on display when local bakers competed in The Great Burnham Bake Off during the town’s Food & Drink Festival on Saturday.

Cakemaker Dusica Roberts, pictured right, won the overall champion’s trophy after her professional cake entry was judged the best entry in the show.

More than 20 bakers battled it out for the top spot – with the entries being judged by Rosemary Jackson from the sponsors Retreat Caravan Park, Bini Ludlow of Indian Spice and Burnham’s Reverend Sharon Eldergill.

The competition also saw prizes awarded to Elllie Williams (Young Baker Champion), Robin Warren (Technical Champion), Nigel and Patrick Smith (Winner Family Cake), P Taylor (Winner Family Bread), Nigel and Patrick Smith (Champion Family), Robin Warren (best individual bread), Phil Harvey (best individual cake), and Phil Harvey (Champion Individual).

Judge Sharon Eldergill told Burnham-On-Sea.com: “The entries were fantastic – we were really impressed with the standard, especially the outstanding young bakers!”

Bini Ludlow added: “It was quite overwhelming – the standard was so high. Great creativity and skill was shown, which for a small town is great to see.”

Rosemary Jackson added: “I thought the standard was superb – it was very difficult to judge given the high quality across the table.”

And sponsor Debbie March of Burnham’s Retreat Caravan Park said: “It was really great to see such a high turnout and quality of entries, especially in the young bakers category and we’re delighted to give our support to this wonderful event.”

Meanwhile, the next Great Burnham Bake Off will take place this autumn when pies are likely to be one of the categories during October’s Burnham-On-Sea’s Food & Drink Festival – more details will be announced in the run-up to the event.
