‘Devastated’ owner of missing Bailey seeks help after Brean Down fall

-

The owner of a dog that has been missing at Brean Down for several days has appealed for the public’s help in finding him.Anne Morris has searched the whole of Brean Down and even called out Burnham-On-Sea Coastguards and a drone expert to in a bid to find her Papillion dog, called Bailey.

The pet, pictured here, went missing on Tuesday while on a walk along the top of Brean Down when he ran off and wasn’t seen again.

Anne says she is “devasted” by the loss of the beloved pet and has searched the Down and surrounding area but nothing has been found. Anyone who sees the distinctive dog can get in contact here via Burnham-On-Sea.com.

Burnham-On-Sea Coastguards were called to Brean Down on Wednesday after Coastguards took a call from a distressed owner who had been searching for her pet dog, a Papillion, that had disappeared while walking on Brean Down.

“The dog had been missing for nearly 24 hours with the owner looking most of the night,” said a spokesman.

“So with the last known position being along by Trig Point we conducted a foot search along the base of Brean Down across the slippery and loose rocks and stopping to look up and along the sloping edges as we went.”

“Two of our team took the Coastguard vehicle up to the top of Brean Down and along to Trig Point to get a visual along the sloping cliff tops and then onwards towards the fort at the furthest point.”

“The two team members on foot continued along towards the fort with nothing found. As the dog had been missing for so long two tides have been and gone before we were tasked, this means that if the dog did fall there is a chance it would be taken by the tide before we would be able to find it.”

“It is always imperative to dial 999 and ask for the Coastguard as soon as possible.”

“Although the owners stated that their dog is well trained and wouldn’t run off, our experience is always that every lost dog has had that split second of madness to chase a smell or some wildlife.”

“Right next to where the dog was last seen is a ledge where the wild goats huddle, an easy distraction for even the best-trained and obedient dog.”

“The top of Brean Down has long but steep slopes towards a sheer drop that you can’t see from the top, once you hit that at any pace your chances of stopping become zero and within seconds you disappear from view.”

“With no signs of the dog, we concluded our search and returned to station ready for the evenings training.”

“This is a timely reminder to keep dogs on leads at all times while on high ground, we see many distressed families who have lost their beloved pets, please don’t be the next.”
