Two badgers who were rescued last week after being stranded on a tiny strip of land in the middle of the flooded Somerset Levels are making a good recovery, wildlife carers have said.
The two animals, named Storm and Noah by rescuers, were retrieved by a team from Secret World Wildlife Rescue near Burnham last month, as reported here.
“After three days of patiently encouraging them to feed, the two badgers are finally feeding themselves and looking brighter after their ordeal,” said Secret World founder Pauline Kidner.
The badgers were stranded on a small strip of land surrounded by deep flood water near Westonzoyland.
Two of the four badgers swam away when the rescue boat arrived to help them, but two were successfully rescued.
They were taken back to a warm casualty pen at Secret World in East Huntspill and have been placed under a heat lamp.
Pauline added: “Noah and Storm were without food for so long and were sodden and cold. We are very concerned that so few wild animals have been found which is why it is so important that we help the survivors. We also don’t know what effects there will be with such a large area flooded where small mammals and hibernating insects will have drowned.”
