Discount retailer B&M is making final preparations to open its new store in Burnham-On-Sea this Thursday (September 22nd).
The premises in Pier Street, which replaces the former Morrisons supermarket that closed last November, will create more than 60 new jobs.
Burnham’s Mayor will formally open the new B&M store at 9am this Thursday. Its contractors have been busy finalising the store in recent days – new exterior signage is in place and the store’s interior has been stocked with new products.
“Customers can expect to find a wide variety of branded and own label products including toys, food & drink, pet products and health & beauty,” said a B&M spokesman. “We’re feeling really positive about the creation of new jobs for local people and we hope customers are going to be delighted with their new store.”
However, many existing shops in Burnham-On-Sea’s town centre are concerned that B&M’s opening may adversely hit their business.
Burnham’s Chamber of Trade has urged shoppers to continue to support the town’s independent shops alongside B&M. “They are the lifeblood of our town centre and we encourage shoppers to continue to support them,” said a spokesman.
B&M claims that its stores actually boost footfall in the surrounding area. The store will be fundraising for the RNLI on its opening day.
