A controlled explosion of a ‘suspicious package’ was carried out by a bomb disposal team outside Highbridge’s Asda supermarket this morning (Tuesday).
The store was closed for several hours from 7am while Police investigated “an unattended item” left outside the supermarket in Caxton Road.
Police sealed off roads and paths around the store shortly after 7am following the discovery of what one eyewitness described as a “cardboard box with tape around it” outside the store.
A bomb disposal team was called in and a small controlled explosion was seen by eyewitnesses being carried out at around 10.30am.
The store, petrol station and car park were closed and fully re-opened at around 11am.
A Police spokesman confirmed there had been a “small, controlled explosion” to ensure the package was dealt with appropriately.
He added: “The unattended item at Asda in Highbridge has been inspected and is not suspicious and poses no harm. The store has now reopened and officers are leaving the scene. We’d like to thank the public for their patience and understanding during the incident.”
