Asda has confirmed this week that it will open a new low-cost petrol station at its Highbridge supermarket later this year.
Sedgemoor District Council gave the go-ahead for the eight-pump petrol station at the store in November 2013.
This week, a spokeswoman for Asda told us that the project will begin in the middle of the year despite some delays.
“We encountered a few issues following our initial groundworks that we were keen to resolve,” she told Burnham-On-Sea.com.
“This delayed the programme slightly. We are currently planning to be on site in late summer, with the petrol station opening before the end of the year.”
There had been local speculation in recent weeks that falling world oil prices and lower profit margins would mean the new petrol station may not go ahead.
However, Asda says it remains committed to the project and the petrol station will be built next to the current access road, pictured right.
While motorists will welcome the extra competition to drive down prices, many nearby residents living next to the site remain unhappy about the scheme.
Residents have campaigned against the petrol station, saying it will create extra noise, pollution and traffic disturbance.
Asda altered its original plans last year by reversing the proposed entrance and exit locations at the proposed petrol station to address road safety concerns.
