Work to start on Highbridge Asda petrol station as fuel price war looms

Asda will start work to build a new petrol station outside its Highbridge store this coming week – and it’s vowing to offer the cheapest fuel prices in the area.

Mick Vaughan, deputy manager at the Highbridge store, confirmed to Burnham-On-Sea.com that building work will begin on Monday (August 24th).

“We’re delighted to be starting the project to build our long-awaited petrol station,” said Mr Vaughan.

“We are fully committed to offering the best local petrol prices and will be under-cutting all competitors.”

“We’re often 7p a litre cheaper than the big name petrol stations in other towns. The market is stale here in the Burnham area and needs some competition,” he said.

The new petrol station is due to open in December.

Sedgemoor District Council gave the go-ahead for the eight-pump petrol station at the store in November 2013.

The new petrol station will be built in place of the small residents’ car park next to the access road into the Highbridge store, pictured right.

Mr Vaughan said the residents have all been offered parking spaces elsewehere in the store’s car park.

While motorists will welcome the extra competition to drive down prices, several nearby residents living next to the site remain unhappy about the scheme. They campaigned against the petrol station, saying it would create extra noise, pollution and traffic disturbance. Asda altered its original plans last year by reversing the proposed entrance and exit locations at the proposed petrol station to address road safety concerns.
